When you meet someone for the first time, your first impression always comes from their appearance. Once you get to speak to them and get to know them better you get to know more about their character and what makes them tick.

Having worked in the recruitment industry for almost 20 years it has always been a very strict dress code. No fly aways in our hair, neutral nail polish and always 100% corporate.

Dressing well during the interview process is also very important. It shows how engaged you are in the recruitment process and your interest in the opportunity.

Even if a company’s dress code is smart business, it’s better to over dress and make a great impression than to not make an impact at all. My clients always say, we know when our candidates come from you Michelle – because they always look the part!

Here are some tips to help you dress appropriately for a job interview and how to look professional in any setting:

    1. Dress formally to make a professional and positive impression
    2. Prepare and try your clothes on in advance to ensure your outfit fits well and you look/feel great in it – this will boost your overall confidence
    3. Go with traditional colours such as black, gray or navy blue when it comes to your business attire. You can add a little bit of colour with accessories such as a tie, jewellery or even some lipstick
    4. Make sure you look your best from head to toe; make sure your shoes are polished, your shirt is ironed, and it all looks good together
    5. Be sure to be well groomed for your interview. Having your hair tied back or neatly groomed is important so your facial expressions may be seen. Some makeup and a nice lipstick colour always has a lifting impact (personally, I always feel a million dollars when my makeup is done nicely).

Remember, dressing professionally is just one aspect of making a good impression during the interview process. Also, prepare well for the potential interview questions, demonstrate confidence, and showcase your skills and qualifications.
